New Balance Sizing True to size

New Balance Sizing: Do New Balance Shoes Run Big, Small or True to Size?

New Balance runs true to size in length. The real differences are in model shape and the 2A to 4E width options that let you skip sizing up.

Quick answer

New Balance fits true to size in length, so order the same US size you wear in Nike, Adidas or Asics. Shape varies by model: the 990 and 992 are roomy, the 550 runs slightly long, and the 327 is slim. If you need more width, choose a 2E or 4E version instead of sizing up.

Our advice
Order your usual US size; pick a 2E or 4E width instead of sizing up when your feet are wide.

New Balance fits true to size in length. If you wear a US 10 in Nike, Adidas or Asics, a US 10 New Balance will be the right length for most feet. What changes from pair to pair is the shape around your forefoot, and that is the part that sends people back to the returns page.

The brand also does something most sneaker companies gave up on decades ago: it sells many models in real widths, from narrow 2A up to extra-wide 4E. So the honest answer to "does New Balance run big or small" is that the length is standard, the volume depends on the model, and the width letter on the box matters as much as the number.

Length is standard, volume is not

Most complaints that New Balance "runs big" come from people moving over from slim Nike lifestyle shoes. A 990 or a 574 has a rounder, less tapered toe than an Air Max or a Dunk, so the shoe feels like it has more room even when the length is identical. Extra room around the toes is not the same thing as extra length.

Before you size down, check where the space actually is. Press down at the front of the shoe while standing. If you find roughly a thumb's width (about 1 to 1.5 cm) beyond your longest toe, the length is correct and the shoe is simply roomy. Sizing down to fix width usually crushes your toes into the end of the shoe within a week.

Fit tip: If a New Balance pair feels sloppy at the sides but the length is right, the fix is a narrower width or a snugger model, not a smaller number.

Three New Balance families, three different feels

It helps to think of the catalog as three groups. Each one is built on different lasts (the foot-shaped molds a shoe is made on), and each group has its own personality.

Made in USA and Made in UK heritage runners

The 990 series (v1 through v6), the 992, the 993 and the UK-made 991 and 1500 are premium versions of old running shoes. They tend to have generous forefoots, thick padding and suede-and-mesh uppers that soften with wear. The 990 and 992 are the roomiest of the group, and many wearers with standard or narrow feet take a half size down in them. The 991 is the exception: it sits tighter through the midfoot, and most people stay at their measured size.

Retro lifestyle models

This is where the variation lives. The 550 is a leather basketball shoe that runs a little long and narrow. The 327 has a sleek, tapered shape that can pinch a wide foot. The 530, 2002R and 1906 sit in the middle with a balanced, secure fit. The 9060 looks enormous but fits true to size, with a padded, forgiving interior. Check our dedicated guides for the 550 and the 9060 before ordering either.

Performance running shoes

Current running models like the Fresh Foam X 1080, 880 and 860, plus the FuelCell line, are designed around a closer, more locked-in fit than the lifestyle pairs. Length is true to size, but runners who log long distances often go a half size up from their casual size to leave room for foot swelling. The 880 and 860 are the models most often stocked in several widths, which makes them a safe pick for hard-to-fit feet.

Model-by-model cheat sheet

This table is our starting point for each popular model, based on the general consensus among wearers. Start from the size your foot measures, not the size printed on your last pair of Nikes.

Collaborations usually follow the general release, but not always. When a collab swaps suede for stiff leather, adds a Cordura shell or layers on extra overlays, the shoe can feel a touch tighter than the standard pair. If a collab uses a noticeably heavier material, treat your usual size as the floor and do not size down further.

The width letters, explained

New Balance prints a letter next to the size, and it is easy to ignore until a pair feels wrong. The letters are not the same for men and women. A men's D is standard, while a women's D is wide. A men's B is narrow, while a women's B is standard.

Shoe width codes: women
Width codeWhat it means
2A (AA)Narrow
BStandard / Medium

New Balance occasionally goes beyond this standard scale, with a 2A extra-narrow option in some men's models and a 4A in a handful of women's ones. Availability depends on the model and the size, and it changes season to season, so check the width selector on the product page at newbalance.com before assuming a width exists. Our shoe width chart covers what each letter means across brands.

Size up or switch widths?

Here is where New Balance saves wide-footed buyers from a common mistake. With most brands, the only way to get more width is to buy a longer shoe, which adds length you don't need and causes heel slip. With New Balance you can keep your true length and move from D to 2E, or from 2E to 4E. If your usual size is a 10 and you have been buying 10.5 elsewhere just to stop the pinch, try a 10 in 2E here.

Watch out: Not every model has widths. Lifestyle shoes like the 550, 327 and 9060 are generally sold in standard width only, so the size-up-for-width rule still applies to those.

How New Balance lines up with Nike, Adidas and Asics

For length, keep the same US number across all four brands. A Nike US 9.5 wearer is a New Balance US 9.5 in almost every case. New Balance feels wider than most Nike lifestyle shoes, a little more forgiving than Asics' structured models, and close to Adidas in length.

The trap is the label, not the shoe. If you shop by UK or EU numbers, the brands do not print the same conversions. In the published charts, a men's US 9 is a UK 8.5 at New Balance but a UK 8 at Nike and Asics. A UK shopper who orders "UK 8" across the board would end up a half size apart between brands. Always convert from the US size or, better, from your foot length in centimeters. Our brand size comparison tool does this side by side.

  • Coming from Nike: same US size; if a Nike pair felt tight across the toes, New Balance will likely feel better at the same number.
  • Coming from Air Force 1 or 550-style leather court shoes: those often run long, so if you sized down there, go back to your measured size for most New Balance runners.
  • Coming from Asics: same US size; expect a little more room up front.

Converting between men's and women's sizes

New Balance uses the usual 1.5-size gap in US sizing: a men's 7 is roughly a women's 8.5, and a women's 9 is roughly a men's 7.5. In the chart below, a women's 8.5 and a men's 7 share the same EU 40, which is a handy way to double-check a conversion.

Width does not translate as neatly. A men's standard D is wider than a women's standard B, so a woman buying a men's or unisex pair in her converted size will often find it roomier at the sides. That's good news for wide feet and a reason for narrow feet to look for the women's version when it exists.

Measure once, then order with confidence

A tape measure beats guesswork. Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall, mark the tip of your longest toe, and measure in centimeters. Do it in the evening when your feet are at their largest, measure both feet, and use the bigger number. Wear the socks you plan to wear with the shoes.

If you have custom orthotics or a thick aftermarket insole, take them with you or factor them in. A thick insole eats up volume quickly and can make a true-to-size pair feel half a size small. That's another case where a 2E width can be the better fix than a longer shoe.

Note: Suede and mesh uppers soften and relax over the first couple of weeks. Leather pairs like the 550 loosen a little at the sides. None of them gets longer, so a pair that is short on day one stays short.

Our recommendation

Order your usual US size in New Balance. Then adjust only for the model: half a size down in the roomy 990 and 992 if your feet are narrow or average, half a size down in the long-running 550 unless your feet are wide, and half a size up in the slim 327 if you have a wide forefoot. When a model is offered in widths, use them. Switching from D to 2E is almost always a better answer to a tight shoe than jumping up half a size.

Frequently asked questions

Why do my New Balance shoes feel bigger than my Nikes?

Usually because of shape, not length. New Balance uses rounder, less tapered toe boxes than most Nike lifestyle shoes, so the same US size has more room around your toes. Check the space beyond your longest toe: if it is about a thumb's width, the length is right and the shoe is just roomier.

What does 2E mean on a New Balance box?

2E is New Balance's wide width for men, one step up from the standard D. For women the scale shifts: B is standard, D is wide and 2E is extra wide. The letter only changes the width and volume of the shoe; the length matches any other pair in the same number.

Should I size down in the New Balance 990?

Many wearers with narrow or average feet take a half size down in the 990v3 through v6 because the forefoot is generous. If your feet are wide, stay at your measured size, or keep your size and move to a 2E width rather than sizing down.

Do New Balance running shoes fit differently from the lifestyle models?

Yes. Running models like the 880, 1080 and 860 hold the midfoot more firmly than retro pairs like the 574 or 9060. Length is still true to size, but distance runners often take a half size up to allow for swelling over long runs.

Is a New Balance UK 8 the same as a Nike UK 8?

Not according to the published charts. A men's US 9 is labeled UK 8.5 by New Balance and UK 8 by Nike. If you shop by UK size, convert from your US size or your foot length in centimeters instead of copying the UK number between brands.
