New Balance 9060 Sizing: True to Size Despite the Chunky Look?
The 9060 looks oversized but fits true to size. Only very wide or high-volume feet should go half a size up.
Quick answer
The New Balance 9060 fits true to size. Order the US size your foot measures: the length is standard, the forefoot is forgiving and the padded collar holds the heel well. Very wide or high-volume feet should go half a size up because the 9060 comes in standard width only. Do not size down because the shoe looks big.

- Order your measured size; go half a size up only for very wide or high-volume feet.
The New Balance 9060 fits true to size. Order the US size your foot measures and you will get normal length, a padded interior that hugs without squeezing, and more forefoot room than the chunky outside suggests. The only buyers who should change size are people with very wide or very high-volume feet, who may want a half size up because the shoe comes in one width.
The 9060 is unusual among New Balance's lifestyle shoes in that almost nobody needs to size down. That makes it easy to get right, as long as you ignore what it looks like on the shelf.
A big shoe in a normal size
The 9060 is all midsole. The sculpted sole flares out at the heel and sides, and the upper is stacked with suede, mesh and thick padding. Next to a slim runner, it looks a full size bigger. That bulk is on the outside. The footbed inside is built on standard New Balance proportions, so the length matches your other true-to-size pairs.
The shoe arrived in 2022, drawing on the 990 and the 860v2 running shoe for its design cues, and it has stayed one of New Balance's best-selling lifestyle models since. Its fit has stayed consistent across releases, which is part of why it gets so few sizing complaints.
Watch out: Don't size down to make the shoe look smaller on foot. You'd lose toe room and the silhouette would barely change. If proportion bothers you, wider-leg trousers balance the heel far better than a smaller size.
Inside the shoe: where you feel the padding
Length
At your measured size, most wearers report about a finger's width of space in front of the longest toe. That is the normal amount for an everyday sneaker. It is neither the extra length of a 550 nor the short feel of some tight retro runners.
Forefoot
The toe box is one of the more forgiving in New Balance's lifestyle range. The upper isn't tapered hard at the front, and the mesh panels give a little where your foot flexes. People with slightly wide feet generally find it comfortable straight away.
Midfoot and collar
This is where the padding shows. The tongue and collar are thick, and the shoe wraps the midfoot closely. For most feet that feels secure rather than tight. For very high insteps or very wide midfoots, it is the area that can feel crowded, since there is less empty space inside than the exterior suggests.
Heel
Heel lockdown is strong at true to size. The padded collar grips the back of the foot, so slip is rarely a complaint, which is another reason not to size down.
Wide feet, narrow feet and the one-width problem
New Balance is known for offering shoes in widths like 2E and 4E, but the 9060 is generally sold in standard width only (D for men, B for women). That is worth knowing before you order, because the usual New Balance fix for wide feet, keeping your length and changing the width, isn't available here.
In practice, most wide feet are fine anyway:
- Slightly wide feet: true to size. The forefoot gives enough room for most.
- Wide feet that need 2E in other New Balance models: try true to size first if you can. If you can't try on, a half size up is the cautious order.
- Very wide or high-volume feet: half a size up. Going a full size up adds too much length and brings back heel slip.

If your feet are narrow
Narrow feet should also stay true to size. The padding takes up volume that would otherwise feel loose, so the 9060 doesn't swim on a slim foot the way a 990 or 992 can. Tighten the laces through the top eyelets for a closer hold. Sizing down for a narrow foot would shorten the shoe without making it noticeably narrower.
Translating from the sneakers you already own
The key is knowing whether you sized up or down in your other pairs. The 9060 lines up with your measured size, so work back to that first.
| If you wear | Typical fit of that shoe | Order the 9060 in |
|---|---|---|
| New Balance 2002R or 1906 | True to size | The same size |
| New Balance 550 | Most people go half down | Half a size up from your 550 |
| New Balance 990v6 or 992 | Many go half down | Your measured size, often half up from those |
| Nike Dunk | True to size | The same size |
| Nike Air Force 1 | Most people go half down | Half a size up from your AF1 |
| Asics Gel-Kayano 14 | True to size | The same size |
So if you wear a 9.5 in the 550 because you sized down from a measured 10, order the 9060 in a 10. If you are coming from the 550, our 550 sizing guide explains why that shoe runs long. For a side-by-side across brands, the brand size comparison tool converts your size from Nike, Adidas or Asics.
Collaborations and material changes
Collaborations on the 9060, such as the Joe Freshgoods and Bodega editions, follow the general-release sizing. The last and the padding stay the same, so your usual 9060 size carries over.
Material swaps are worth a quick look, though. Pairs that trade some of the mesh for more suede or leather overlays feel a little firmer at first, while mesh-heavy colorways feel slightly softer at the sides. Neither changes the length, and neither justifies a change in size for most feet. If you are on the edge of needing a half size up for width, a mesh-heavy colorway gives you a bit more margin.
Women's sizing and smaller sizes
The 9060 is sold in men's (often listed as unisex) and women's sizing, depending on the colorway. To convert, use the usual 1.5-size gap: a women's 8.5 is a men's 7, and both sit at EU 40 on the chart below. A women's 9 is roughly a men's 7.5.
Men's pairs are cut on a standard D width, which is wider than the women's standard B. If you have narrow feet and buy a men's pair in your converted size, expect a little more room at the sides; lacing firmly takes care of most of it. If your feet are wide, buying the men's version in your converted size is an easy way to get extra width the 9060 otherwise doesn't offer.
Smaller sizes of the 9060 tend to sell through quickly, so if you're a small men's or a women's size, check the women's and grade-school listings as well.
New Balance 9060 size chart
The 9060 uses New Balance's standard size conversions. Measure your foot in the evening (our foot measuring guide shows the wall-and-paper method), find the closest foot length, and order that row. If you land between two sizes, the larger one is the safer pick for this shoe.

Fit tip: Measure while standing, with the socks you'll wear, and use your longer foot. The 9060's padding feels different with thin dress socks than with thick athletic ones, so test with the pair you will actually wear.
Break-in and long-term feel
There is very little break-in. The padding is soft from the first wear, and the suede and mesh upper relaxes slightly over the first week. The ABZORB and SBS cushioning in the sole doesn't change the fit as it wears in. What you feel in the first ten minutes is close to what you'll feel after a month, which makes the try-on reliable.
If the midfoot feels slightly firm when new, loosen the laces across the middle eyelets before deciding the shoe is too small. That alone settles most early pressure.
All-day wear, walking and travel
The 9060 borrows its look from running shoes, but it is a lifestyle sneaker. It is comfortable for long days on your feet, city walking and travel, and the sizing advice doesn't change for those uses. Feet swell over a long day, so if you plan to wear the 9060 for ten hours at a time, measure in the evening and give yourself the larger size if you sit between two.
It isn't built for running. The upper is heavy, the sole is stiff compared with a modern trainer, and there is no performance-fit option. If you want a New Balance to run in, look at the brand's running line, where wide widths are common and runners often go a half size up from their casual size. Keep the 9060 at your everyday size for everyday wear.
Our recommendation
Order the New Balance 9060 in your true size. Narrow, average and slightly wide feet all fit well there, and the strong heel hold means there is no reason to size down. If you have very wide or very high-volume feet, go half a size up, since there is no 2E version to switch to. Don't let the oversized look push you toward a smaller size; the bulk is in the sole, not the fit.
Frequently asked questions
Should I size down in the New Balance 9060 because it looks big?
No. The bulk is in the midsole and the padding, not the length. At your true size you get about a finger of room past the toes and a secure heel. Sizing down shortens the shoe without making it look meaningfully smaller and can crowd your toes.
Does the New Balance 9060 come in wide?
The 9060 is generally offered in standard width only, D for men and B for women. The forefoot is forgiving enough for most slightly wide feet at true to size. If you normally need a 2E or wider, go half a size up rather than a full size.
Is the 9060 the same size as the New Balance 550?
Usually not. The 550 runs long and most people go half a size down in it, while the 9060 is true to size. If your 550 is a half size smaller than your measured size, order the 9060 a half size up from your 550.
Do 9060 collaborations fit differently?
Collaborations such as Joe Freshgoods and Bodega use the same last and padding as the general release, so your usual 9060 size carries over. Colorways with more suede or leather can feel slightly firmer at first, but not enough to change size for most people.
Does the 9060 need breaking in?
Very little. The padding is soft from day one and the upper relaxes a touch in the first week. Because the fit barely changes, how the shoe feels during your first try-on is a reliable guide to how it will feel after months of wear.
