Asics Gel-Kayano 14 Sizing: True to Size or Size Up?
The Gel-Kayano 14 is true to size with a snug midfoot. Only genuinely wide or high-volume feet need half a size up.
Quick answer
The Asics Gel-Kayano 14 fits true to size. Order your measured US size for correct length and a secure heel. The midfoot and forefoot feel close, which is normal for this retro stability runner, not a sign it runs small. Go half a size up only if your feet are genuinely wide or high-volume, since it comes in standard width only.

The Asics Gel-Kayano 14 fits true to size. Order the US size your foot measures and you'll get the right length with about a finger's width in front of your toes. The fit is close through the midfoot and the sides of the forefoot, which some people read as "runs small." It doesn't: the shoe is snug, not short.
The only buyers who should consider a half size up are people with genuinely wide or high-volume feet, because the lifestyle Kayano 14 is sold in a single standard width.
Where the Kayano 14 holds you, and where it doesn't
The Kayano 14 is a reissue of a 2008 stability running shoe, so it carries a runner's shape: a firm heel, a supportive midfoot and a layered mesh upper with synthetic overlays. The Gel-Kayano line started in 1993, named after Asics designer Toshikazu Kayano, and the 14th version was its 2008 update. Asics brought it back as a lifestyle sneaker in the early 2020s, and it now sells far more for everyday wear than it ever did as a running shoe. Here is how that running heritage plays out from back to front.
Heel
Secure at true to size. The padded collar and stiff heel counter keep the foot in place, and heel slip is rarely mentioned by wearers. You don't need a smaller size to lock the heel down.
Midfoot
This is the closest part of the fit. The overlays and lacing wrap the arch area firmly, which is what gives the shoe its supported, "held" feeling. People with high insteps or flat, wide feet often notice pressure here in the first few wears.
Forefoot and toe box
The toe box is balanced rather than roomy. Your toes sit naturally, but the upper follows the shape of the forefoot more closely than a Gel-1130 or a Nike Vomero 5. Slightly wide feet usually fit without pinching; truly wide feet can feel the sides.
Length
Standard. Most wearers find a finger's width of space in front of the longest toe at their measured size, which is right for an everyday sneaker.
Snug is not the same as small
The most common Kayano 14 sizing mistake is going up half a size because the shoe feels close on the first try-on. A closer upper doesn't mean the shoe is short. If you size up for that reason, you add length you don't need, and the extra space usually shows up as heel lift and a sloppy toe.
Before you change size, run through three checks:
- Press the front of the shoe while standing. If there is a finger's width of room past your longest toe, the length is right.
- Loosen the laces across the middle eyelets. Most midfoot pressure in the Kayano 14 is a lacing issue, not a sizing one.
- Wear them around the house for an hour or two. If the close feel stays even and doesn't build into a hot spot, keep your size.
Fit tip: If pressure is concentrated over the top of the foot, try skipping the eyelet at the high point of your instep. If it is concentrated on the little toe, that points to width, and a half size up is the reasonable fix.
Which size for your foot shape
- Narrow feet: true to size. The close midfoot suits a slim foot, and sizing down would cost you toe room.
- Average feet: true to size.
- Slightly wide feet: true to size. Expect a firm feel across the ball of the foot for the first few wears.
- Genuinely wide feet: try true to size if you can; if ordering blind, go half a size up.
- High-volume feet or high insteps: true to size if loosening the laces solves the pressure, otherwise half a size up.
- Flat, wide feet: true to size usually works, though the arch support can feel pronounced at first.
Never more than half a size up. A full size adds too much length for a shoe whose issue is volume, not length.
Kayano 14 vs Nike Vomero 5
These two retro runners are the shoes people most often cross-shop, and the good news is that most wearers take the same size in both. The difference is how much room you get at that size.
| Area | Gel-Kayano 14 | Nike Vomero 5 |
|---|---|---|
| Length | Standard | Standard |
| Forefoot | Follows the foot closely | More room for toes to spread |
| Midfoot | Firm, wrapped | Roomier over the top |
| Heel | Secure | Secure |
| Best for | Narrow to slightly wide feet | Wide and high-volume feet |
If you are between sizes, lean smaller in the Vomero 5 if you like a close feel, and lean larger in the Kayano 14 if your foot is wide or high-volume. If you already own a Vomero 5 in your true size and it feels just right rather than roomy, the Kayano 14 in the same size will feel a step closer. Our Nike sizing guide covers how the Vomero line fits relative to other Nike runners.
Against other Asics and New Balance pairs
If you already know your size in another retro runner, use it, adjusting for whether you sized up or down in that shoe.
- Asics Gel-1130: same size for most people, but the 1130 is noticeably roomier. Narrow-footed wearers sometimes size down in the 1130; if you did, go back up to your measured size for the Kayano 14. See our Gel-1130 guide.
- Asics GT-2160 and Gel-NYC: very similar snug, structured fits. Same size.
- Asics Gel-Kayano 20 and 12.1: the 20 feels a little snugger, the 12.1 about the same. Same size across all three for most feet.
- Asics Kayano Legacy: same size, with a bit more toe room than the 14.
- New Balance 2002R and 1906: similar length, so the same US size.
- New Balance 530 or 550: many people size down in those because they run long. Order the Kayano 14 at your measured size, not your 530 or 550 size.

Collaborations and women's pairs
Kayano 14 collaborations, including the Kith and JJJJound releases, are built on the same last as the general release and fit the same. Your usual Kayano 14 size carries over.
The Kayano 14 is sold in both men's and women's sizing. To convert, use the standard 1.5-size gap: a women's 9.5 equals a men's 8, and both are EU 41.5 on the Asics chart below. A men's pair is cut on the standard D width, which is wider than the women's standard B, so women ordering men's sizes get a little more room at the sides. If your feet are narrow, the women's version will give the closer fit the shoe is designed for.
Width availability
The performance Gel-Kayano that Asics sells today comes in wide 2E and extra-wide 4E for men in many sizes. The Kayano 14 reissue is a lifestyle shoe and is generally offered in standard width only. If you need a 2E in your running shoes, assume the Kayano 14 will feel snug at your true size and plan on a half size up. Our shoe width chart explains what each letter means.

Watch out: Asics EU sizes don't always match Nike's. On the published charts, a men's US 9.5 is EU 43.5 at Asics and EU 43 at Nike. If you shop in EU sizes, convert from your US size rather than copying the EU number.
Break-in and everyday use
The mesh and synthetic upper softens a little over the first few wears, and the midfoot pressure eases as the overlays flex. That's a small change, not a stretch. Plan on the shoe feeling about the same in length after a month as it does on day one, and don't buy a pair that hurts in the hope it will loosen.
Can you run in it? You can jog in a Kayano 14, but it is sold as a lifestyle shoe, and its cushioning and materials are a generation behind Asics' current running range. If running is the main job, size the modern Gel-Kayano instead and consider the half-size-up rule many distance runners use. For walking, travel and long days on your feet, the Kayano 14 at your true size is comfortable; feet swell through the day, so measure in the evening and take the larger size if you are right on the line.
Our recommendation
Buy the Asics Gel-Kayano 14 in your true size. Narrow, average and slightly wide feet all fit well there, and the snug midfoot is part of the design, not a sign the shoe is too small. Go half a size up only if your feet are genuinely wide or high-volume and loosening the laces doesn't solve it. If you want the same retro look with more room, the Vomero 5 or Gel-1130 at your usual size is the roomier alternative.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Gel-Kayano 14 run small?
No. The length is standard, with about a finger of room past the toes at your true size. The midfoot and forefoot sit close to the foot, which can feel small on a first try-on. Loosen the laces across the middle before deciding to size up.
Is the Kayano 14 the same size as the Nike Vomero 5?
Most wearers take the same US size in both. The Vomero 5 feels roomier through the forefoot and over the top of the foot, while the Kayano 14 wraps closer. Wide or high-volume feet are more comfortable in the Vomero 5 at the same size.
Should wide feet size up in the Kayano 14?
Slightly wide feet usually do fine at true size. If you need a 2E width in other shoes or have a high-volume foot, go half a size up, since the lifestyle Kayano 14 is generally sold in standard width only. Avoid going a full size up.
Do Kayano 14 collaborations fit differently?
Collaborations such as the Kith and JJJJound releases are built on the same last as the general release and fit the same. Use your normal Kayano 14 size. Material changes on some collabs can make the upper feel slightly firmer at first, but not enough to change sizes.
Is the Kayano 14 sized like the Gel-1130?
The length is the same, so most people wear the same size. The Gel-1130 has a roomier, airier upper. If you sized down in the 1130 because your feet are narrow, go back to your measured size for the Kayano 14.
