Quick answer

The New Balance 550 runs about half a size long, so most people with narrow or average feet should order a half size down. The toe box is narrow and the leather is stiff, so if your feet are wide, stay true to size and manage the extra length with socks or an insole. Never go a full size down.

Our advice
Go half a size down for narrow or average feet; stay true to size if your feet are wide.

The New Balance 550 runs slightly long, and most people get the best fit by ordering a half size down from their measured size. The catch is the toe box: it is narrower than the length suggests, so if your feet are wide, stay at your true size and accept a little extra room at the front.

That combination of extra length and a slim forefoot is why the 550 produces so many mixed reviews. One buyer says "runs big," the next says "too tight," and both are describing the same shoe from different ends.

Long and slim at the same time

The 550 started life in 1989 as a low-top basketball shoe, and it is built like one: a leather upper, a firm cupsole and a fairly straight, narrow last. Basketball shoes of that era were designed to hold the foot tight from side to side, and the reissue keeps that character.

The length is where it departs from the rest of the New Balance lineup. At your measured size, you will usually find more space past your toes than in a 530 or a 2002R. That extra length is the root of the shoe's most common complaint, which is heel slip. When the shoe is a touch long, your heel lifts with every step, and leather that has not broken in yet makes it worse.

Not every source agrees on how big the effect is. Some fit guides list the 550 as true to size, and plenty of wearers are happy at their usual number. The broader consensus among people who own several pairs is that it runs about half a size long. We side with the consensus for average and narrow feet, with an important exception for wide ones.

Which size should you order?

Start from the size your foot actually measures, not the size you wear in another sneaker. Then pick the line that describes you:

  • Narrow or average-width feet: half a size down. You lose the extra length, the heel locks in, and the forefoot is less likely to feel loose.
  • Slightly wide feet: half a size down still works for many, but expect a snug break-in over the first couple of weeks.
  • Genuinely wide feet: stay true to size. The toe box will be more comfortable, and you can manage the extra length with thicker socks or a thicker insole.
  • You hate heel slip: size down.
  • You hate pressure on the sides of your toes: stay true to size.

Fit tip: The 550 has a removable insole. If you stay true to size and the heel lifts, a slightly thicker insole fills the extra volume. If you size down and the toes feel crowded, a thinner one buys back a little room.

How the leather changes the fit

Most general-release 550s use a smooth leather upper with suede or perforated leather overlays. It is stiff at first. The sides soften and mold to your foot over time, but the shoe does not get longer, and the toe box never opens up the way a mesh runner does.

That stiffness varies between colorways. Some releases use thicker, glossier leather that feels tighter across the forefoot than a typical pair. College-themed colorways and pairs with a heavier finish are the ones wearers most often flag as snugger. If the product photos show a thick, shiny leather and your feet lean wide, true to size is the safer pick for that specific pair.

Collaborations

The big collaborations, including Aimé Leon Dore, Joe Freshgoods, Rich Paul and Auralee, fit like the general release, so your usual 550 size carries over. Pairs that swap the leather for a heavier technical fabric, such as the Size? edition in Cordura, feel a little firmer but not enough to change sizes.

Break-in: what to expect in the first weeks

Plan on a real break-in. The first few wears can feel tight across the ball of the foot, especially at the half-size-down option. Wear them around the house for short stretches first, with the socks you normally use, and lace them firmly enough to hold the heel.

After a couple of weeks the leather usually relaxes at the sides and the creases settle. What does not change is length. If your longest toe touches the front of the shoe when you stand, the pair is too short, and no amount of wear will fix it. If you are not willing to put in break-in time, true to size feels better out of the box at the cost of a looser heel.

Watch out: Leather that pinches badly on day one is a sign the shoe is too narrow for you, not that it needs more wearing in. Mild pressure fades; sharp pressure or numbness does not.

550 next to the sneakers you already own

Your size in another shoe is the fastest shortcut, as long as you know whether you sized up or down in that shoe too.

  • Nike Air Force 1: the closest match. The AF1 also runs long, and most people take a half size down. If your AF1 size feels right, order the same number in the 550. See our Air Force 1 sizing guide for that shoe's quirks.
  • Nike Dunk: the Dunk is generally true to size, so go a half size down from your Dunk size. A 10 in Dunks becomes a 9.5 in the 550. Our Dunk sizing guide has more.
  • New Balance 9060: the 9060 fits true to size and feels much roomier. Expect your 550 to be a half size smaller than your 9060 for most feet. More in the 9060 guide.
  • New Balance 530, 2002R, 1906: all true to size with a more forgiving forefoot, so take a half size down from those for the 550 unless your feet are wide.
  • New Balance 990 and 992: if you already size down in those, you will likely land on the same number in the 550.

Women's sizing and unisex pairs

The 550 is sold in both women's and men's sizing, depending on the colorway. In the women's version the same rule applies: it runs about half a size long, so most women go half a size down from their usual women's size.

If you are buying a men's or unisex pair, convert first and then adjust. The standard gap is 1.5 sizes, so a women's 8 is a men's 6.5. Because the 550 runs long, a men's 6 is often the better fit. Men's pairs are cut on a slightly wider standard width than women's pairs, which helps if your feet are on the wider side and can feel roomy if they are narrow.

Widths

Unlike many New Balance running shoes, the 550 is generally offered in standard width only: D for men's sizing, B for women's. There is no 2E or 4E option to fall back on, which is why wide-footed buyers need to keep their true length rather than sizing down. If you are not sure where your feet fall, our shoe width chart explains the letters.

Checking the fit when the box arrives

Because the 550 sits between two sizes for so many people, a quick at-home check before you wear them outside will tell you whether to keep or exchange.

  1. Lace them fully. Judge the fit with the laces snug through the top eyelets, the way you will actually wear them. A loose lace job exaggerates heel slip.
  2. Stand and press the toe. You want roughly a finger to a thumb's width of space beyond your longest toe. Much more than that and the pair is long; none at all and it is short.
  3. Walk up a flight of stairs. Stairs show heel lift better than flat floor. A small amount of movement in new leather is normal; a heel that pops out of the counter on every step is not.
  4. Check the sides of the forefoot. Light, even pressure across the ball of the foot is normal for a new 550. A hot spot on the little toe after ten minutes usually means the width is wrong for you.

Do all of this on a clean floor so the soles stay unmarked and the pair can still be exchanged. If you are torn between the two sizes after these checks, keep the smaller one only if the discomfort is a general snugness rather than a single pressure point.

Bottom line

Order the New Balance 550 a half size down if your feet are narrow or average and you are willing to break in the leather. Stay true to size if your feet are wide, if you want comfort from the first wear, or if the colorway uses an especially thick, stiff leather. Don't go down a full size: the toe box is already slim, and the shoe will not stretch in length.

Frequently asked questions

Is the New Balance 550 the same size as the Air Force 1?

In length they behave alike. Both run a little long, and most people take a half size down in each. If your Air Force 1 size fits well, order the same number in the 550. The 550 can feel slightly narrower across the toes, so wide feet may want to stay at their measured size.

Why does my heel slip in the New Balance 550?

Heel slip in the 550 usually means the shoe is a touch long for you, which is common at true to size. The stiff leather adds to it until the shoe breaks in. Try a half size down, or keep your size and add a thicker insole and firmer lacing.

Does the New Balance 550 stretch?

The leather upper relaxes at the sides over a few weeks of wear, so a snug forefoot usually eases up. The shoe does not get longer. If your toes touch the front on day one, the pair is too short and will stay that way.

Does the New Balance 550 come in wide widths?

The 550 is generally sold in standard width only, D for men and B for women. Since you cannot switch to a 2E, wide-footed buyers should keep their true length rather than sizing down, and look for colorways with softer leather.

What size 550 should a woman order in men's sizing?

Subtract 1.5 from your women's size to get the men's equivalent, then consider a further half size down because the 550 runs long. A women's 8 converts to a men's 6.5, and many women end up happiest in a men's 6.
